Mental Health Awareness in Sport – An introductory course for all coaches delivered by ‘Time to Change’
This free of charge course is specifically designed for coaches and volunteers at any level, plus people working in sports development, sports equality, physical education or sports governing bodies. The course is two hours long and free to attend. Attendees don’t need any previous knowledge of mental health.
Although delivered in partnership with the RFL and State of Mind, the course is suitable for coaches from all sports. Previous training has been attended by coaches from 27 different sports, including football, athletics, archery, boxing, cricket, dance and fencing.
The course includes:
- What is mental health? Different diagnoses and symptoms, with examples from sport
- Physical impacts of mental health problems
- Mental benefits of exercise
- Practical guidance for coaching players with mental health problems
- Legal requirements of clubs
- Signposting to other sources of help and information
The training is delivered by Time to Change, a project by leading mental health charities Mind and Rethink. All trainees will receive a certificate of attendance. The course is approved CPD for rugby league coaches.
